Kenan Center History and Architecture
For those who marvel at the beauty of heritage architecture, and find history fascinating, the Kenan Center offers many opportunities to delve into the past! We welcome visitors to stroll through the 1859 Kenan House, open during gallery hours, Monday-Friday, Noon to 5 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays, 2-5 pm (Labor Day-Memorial Day.) Much of original structure and architectural details remains, making it a stunning example of late 19th century Italianate design. Visitors can also enjoy special touring opportunities during community events such as Lockport in Bloom which takes place every July and the Historic Holiday Tour of Homes in November.
After several years of acquiring period furniture and room decor and having custom upholstery and draperies created, Mrs. Kenan’s sitting room, otherwise known as the Ladies’ Parlor, is now on view. The room has been recreated based on a photo taken in 1913, the year the Kenan’s moved into the house on Locust Street. Enjoy this glimpse of life at the turn-of-the-century when visiting the Kenan Center House and Gallery.
Niagara County Bicentennial Quilt
The Kenan Center Quilters’ Guild, through many months of collaborative effort, put together this stunning quilt that depicts the many historical sites throughout Niagara County. The quilt now hangs in the Kenan Center House Gallery and can be viewed any time during gallery hours.
For more on the Kenan Center buildings and campus, visit the Campus page where you can also download a copy of our House History and Gardens brochures.
Historic Lockport is a wonderful place for a day trip! During the warm weather months, you can take a boat ride through the Erie Canal Locks; all year long, there are other historic sites to visit such as the Erie Canal Discovery Center, the First Presbyterian Church which features original Tiffany stained glass windows, and, of course, the Kenan Center.
